Sic bo and video po

21 April 2013
QUESTION: I’d never played sic bo before, but it was only a dollar a bet at one of those new tables with the video dealers, so I decided to give it a try. Another player told me that the best bet was on single numbers, that a dealer had explained to him that with three different numbers on the dice, he paid half the numbers and took the other half. ... The odd thing about odds

18 April 2013
Craps is not a family game in the Grochowski household. I do have a craps layout that I use in seminars, but we don’t sit around the kitchen table and roll them bones unless we’re playing Yahtzee or Monopoly. But there are plenty of dice in the house, and we picked a pair one night when old friend Jeff was over for dinner. ... (read more)

Banned in blackjack and bonus video poker

14 April 2013
QUESTION: I’ve been playing blackjack for a long time, and recently encountered a situation I’d never seen. The first baseman hit a hard 17 against a 10. The dealer called out the play, and a supervisor game over to watch. The player drew a 6 and busted. The dealer turned up another 10 and finished the hand. ... (read more)

Good service goes a long way

11 April 2013
On any given day, most people who play in casinos are going to lose money. Casino operators know that, and players know it too. The trick for the operators is to make the players feel good about their day out. Little customer service touches go a long way toward keeping us happy, or close. Check out a few ... (read more)

Royals and sports betting

7 April 2013
QUESTION: On your recommendation, I’ve been practicing video poker on my computer, and looking at some of the stats for the different games. The software I use says royal flushes come up once every 40,391 hands on 9/6 Jacks or Better, but a little less often at once per 40,170 on 8/5 Jacks or Better. ... (read more)

Even money: Yes or no?

4 April 2013
In the never-ending quest to get an edge over the casino, players try any number of tricks. Most of them don’t work. A few do, in the less-than-a-handful of games where players’ actions can alter the outcomes. Blackjack is one of those games, and not long ago I had the opportunity to see two advantage seekers meet head-on. ... (read more)

Two-to-one payouts on video poker and blackjack

31 March 2013
QUESTION: I recently found a strange variation on video poker. It was a quarter 7/5 Double Double Bonus Poker game, except with an eight-coin maximum bet instead of the usual five. At the top of the pay table, there was some serious weirdness. Royal flushes paid 250-for-1 and were a straight multiplier. ... (read more)

Some big questions about video slot machines

28 March 2013
Way back in the late 1990s, as video slots were first gaining a foothold on casino floors, players used to ask the same question, over and over. “How can you tell when you’ve won with all these crazy paylines?” That was back in the days of five-line and nine-line games, revolutionary in their times. ... 50/50 games and meteors

24 March 2013
QUESTION: How close to a 50-50 bet is blackjack? By that I don’t mean a zero house edge, I mean how close do players come to winning 50% of the hands. How does that compare to other casino games? ANSWER: Disregarding pushes, basic strategy players at blackjack win about 48% of hands. If there were no makeup rules, that would give the house a 4% edge. ... (read more)

Slotomania abounds

21 March 2013
One of the biggest shifts in the casino industry has been the development and position of slot machines as games people play because they’re fun, with the added attraction of a shot to win. Everybody wants to win, but there’s a substantial core of players who are happy as long as they get to the bonus rounds often enough to stretch their money and get their entertainment dollar’s worth. ...
