Casino City's Friday Five: The Mayweather vs. McGregor edition

25 August 2017

The Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight is dominating headlines all across the globe. Everyone, everywhere, it seems, wants to talk about and/or has an opinion about the event that takes place Saturday night in Las Vegas – most notably, the gambling world.

So, it's only fitting that our very first edition Casino City's "Friday Five" be covered head to toe with stories about the much-anticipated bout that pits the greatest boxer in history against the biggest UFC star in the world.

The idea behind Casino City's "Friday Five" is simple. Before you head into your weekend, every Friday Casino City will highlight the five biggest gaming industry stories of the last seven days. It will serve as your weekend primer and feature the news and events that anyone with a gambling pulse will be talking about at any cocktail party or weekend gathering you attend over the next two days.

And, of course, this weekend it's all about the action Mayweather-McGregor will generate both inside and outside the ring.

1. Top 10 ways to bet the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight

In days following the official announcement of the newest "Fight of the Century," Casino City's Managing Editor Gary Trask was quick to provide his opinion on who would win, penning his article, "Top 10 reasons Conor McGregor has no shot to beat Floyd Mayweather." He followed up that article this week with 10 ways to bet Saturday night's fight, taking advantage of the many proposition wagers available by the likes of Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino, BetOnline Sports and Bovada Sportsbook.

2. William Hill awash with Mayweather money
As Gary pointed out in his Top 10 earlier this week, it was only a matter of time before some big money started to come in on Mayweather at sportsbooks. And, sure enough, the floodgates opened up late Friday.

William Hill reports that one customer strolled into one of its sportsbook locations in Nevada and placed over $1.2 million dollars on Mayweather at odds of -500. That bet was separate from a customer who wired in $300,000 and bet Mayweather on the William Hill mobile sportsbook app, prompting William Hill US Director of Trading Nick Bogdanovich to say. "It's going to be the biggest fight handle ever. Period. Whether it's boxing, gladiators or Game of Thrones."

3. Paddy Power pays out early on Mayweather-McGregor match
Our wacky friends at Paddy Power Sportsbook were at it again this week, making headlines for, once again, paying out a major event early (remember, they paid out Hillary Clinton bets a month before the U.S. general election last year, and we all know how that worked out). They also, once again, got themselves in hot water with the "PC Police" for another risqué marketing strategy.

As usual, Paddy Power's marketing worked brilliantly, drawing worldwide attention from not only mainstream media, but Mayweather himself:

4. Mayweather vs. McGregor biggest boxing match in BetVictor's history
While Las Vegas is buzzing right now as the opening bell nears, the fight is also causing reverberations offshore.

BetVictor Sports, which is offering McGregor at astounding 100-to-1 odds, announced that it has been "overwhelmed with action" and that the fight has already attracted three times the amount of bets it generated on the epic Joshua vs. Klitschko match at Wembley earlier in the year.

5. Viewing parties from coast-to-coast
If you aren't in Las Vegas for the fight, there are still plenty of opportunities to watch the action go down — other than shelling out 99 bucks for the pay-per-view.

In addition to the tens of thousands of home viewing parties taking place, casinos outside Nevada are also hosting special "Fight Nights," including:
Foxwoods to host night of nonstop boxing
Pala Casino to show Mayweather, McGregor match
SugarHouse Casino Poker Room to showcase super fight
Mayweather vs. McGregor to be broadcasted live from Tropicana Atlantic City
