Say you're in a $5/$10 Texas Hold'em game and you're in an early seat with a pair of red Aces in the pocket. The flop comes:
Qs-7c-4s
The "turn" card (fourth board card) is the 10 of spades and then a deuce of spades comes at the river. ... (read more)
When Should You Break Basic Blackjack Strategy?27 April 2007
In a past column, we ran through three fundamental truths about blackjack that most players either aren't aware of -– or don't believe in. They were:
Money Management Doesn't Win
Bad Players Don't Hurt You
Basic Strategy Is Not Sacred
Shortly afterwards, I received a response from a reader regarding #3. ... (read more)
Which Are the Best Hands to Play in Texas Hold'em?20 April 2007
In Hold'em poker, there are only 169 two-card starting hands you can be dealt. That's a lot fewer than the 1500 three-card starts you can get in 7 Card Stud. In fact, in Omaha Hi/Lo, there are over 5000. That's part of what makes Hold'em simple to understand.
Yet, most of those 169 Hold'em hands should never be played –- not even to see the flop. ... (read more)
Will the Blackjack "Ploppies" Ever Get It Right?13 April 2007
Hey you! Yeah you -- reading this column right here, right now. Something's been bugging me about the way you play blackjack. So I've got to ask you this question. Suppose you're playing in a typical shoe game, or even double deck, and you're dealt:
6/2
The dealer has a 6 up. ... (read more)
In Poker, You Usually Raise or Fold - But Don't Call Much17 March 2007
Every time there's a bet made to you in a hand of poker, you have three choices - call, raise or fold. Sociable players who are in it for the fun of gambling tend to call way too much. If you're in it to win, you should usually be folding and sometimes raising – but calling only now and then. Here's ... (read more)
Playing Advantage Blackjack takes discipline and money10 March 2007
Keeping track of the cards that have been played has proven to be a way to beat the house at blackjack. Those who can play at that level are called "advantage" blackjack players. Most standard card counting methods however are much too technical for the average player to use.
But ever since ... (read more)
Texas Hold'em is not a draw-out poker game3 March 2007
Once the flop hits the board in Hold'em, the leading hand holds up and wins the pot more often than in just about any other form of poker. So if you don't flop the best hand, you probably don't belong in the pot any more (with a few exceptions to be discussed later).
It's critical to realize this fact if you're going to be a Hold'em player. ... (read more)
Advanced Blackjack Plays Aggravate Other Players17 February 2007
Once a blackjack player learns most of his correct hand-playing strategy, he can quickly recognize novices by their dumb mistakes. The irony is, sometimes a true blackjack expert will make the same bizarre play as a novice, but for a totally different reason. When a typical blackjack veteran observes the expert making this unusual play, he generally mistakes the expert for a novice. ... (read more)
Turnabout can come swiftly at the blackjack table10 February 2007
I sat down at an empty blackjack table and began betting the table minimum. When you're alone with the dealer, you'll usually get in about 40 hands per shoe. Sticking with table minimum bets, I was down 26 bets by the time the yellow cut-card popped out. That means I had to have gone something like 7-33 on that shoe. ... (read more)
Does It Pay to Push Your "Hot Streak" in Poker?3 February 2007
The slick dude with the baseball cap and sunglasses sat behind a mountain of chips down at the end of the poker table. He had won four of the last six pots and was pushing everybody around for the past hour. The other players were scared to go up against him. If he was in the pot, they were folding hands they'd have played under ordinary circumstances. ... (read more)
