Test Your Blackjack and Poker Knowledge with This Quiz

18 August 2007
Most experts agree that blackjack and live poker are the only two casino table games that can be beaten outright. So let's test your blackjack and poker knowledge to see if you have what it takes to win. Following are nine multiple choice strategy questions pertaining to blackjack, Texas Hold'em and Omaha Hi/Lo Split. ... (read more)

Blackjack Winners and Losers Think in Opposite Directions

4 August 2007
More than 99% of all the blackjack players are lifetime losers at the game. Yet, there are people who are lifetime winners at it. But what separates the winners from the losers? Is the winner smarter? Luckier? What, then? Let's run through a series of typical blackjack scenarios and compare what the average player is thinking vs. ... (read more)

Silly blackjack quirks abound at the tables

27 July 2007
I walked up to a blackjack table about one deck into a six-deck shoe and attempted to buy in. The player on my right who was betting strictly black chips asked if I could please "wait a little bit". "I'll wait a couple of hands", I replied, and he thanked me. Playing devil's advocate, I asked, "Will that help?" "I dunno," he responded. ... (read more)

When In Doubt, Fold!

20 July 2007
When you're in a poker hand, many of your decisions regarding whether to play or fold will be clear and simple. If you're playing Texas Hold'em and you've been dealt a 9/6, there's nothing to think about – fold it. Say you're playing regular 7 Card Stud and you've got 4-K/K on you first three cards. ... Most blackjack players overreact to the small stuff

13 July 2007
Four of us were sitting at the blackjack table watching the dealer shuffle. At the completion, she called out, "Rolling", to the floor and offered the six-deck pack for a cut. First base cut the cards, the dealer put them in the shoe and then burned the first card. First base instantly pointed at the ... (read more)

Beating the Blackjack Dealer Is Tougher Than It Looks

22 June 2007
I was playing blackjack and the player next to me had a pair of 7s against a dealer's 7 up. He split them, which was the correct play even though he ended up losing both hands. "How do they do it? I'm supposed to get two pushes there", he complained. "Or at least win one and lose ... (read more)

A question of blackjack ethics

15 June 2007
Some time ago in a past column, I asked your opinion of whether it was morally right to keep a mistaken payoff from the blackjack dealer on a hand you actually lost. Many of you e-mailed back, saying it was the casino's responsibility to collect all losing bets, and you felt justified in keeping ... (read more)

How Big Is the House Edge in Live Poker?

8 June 2007
Every game in the casino has a house edge. That's why the casino's there. But in live poker you don't play against the house – you play against the other players. That might make it seem as though there's no house edge to buck, but there is. The house takes a "rake" from every pot. Depending upon where you're playing, this rake can be anywhere from $4 to $6. ... (read more)

Can you recognize a good poker hand when you see one?

19 May 2007
Once the flop comes down in a game like Texas Hold'em, if you've got a good hand you'll know it. Hold'em is a simple, self-apparent game. If you have Ace/King and a 2-6-K flops, you've clearly got the top pair. And if you have 10/J when that same 2-6-K flops, what've you got? See what I mean? In other ... (read more)

If you don't trust blackjack strategy, test it

12 May 2007
I recently returned from a cruise vacation in the Caribbean. There was a casino on board ship and you'd pretty much see the same people at the blackjack tables night after night. Because of that, things got friendlier and more sociable than usual between the players. Normally when I play blackjack, I mind my own business, play my own game and get in and out. ... (read more)
