Fred Renzey Gaming Guru - Page 9Let's fix those blackjack "problem hands"20 January 2007
In this weekly column, blackjack strategy has often been discussed at a higher level than in your average newspaper gaming column. But one very basic thing continues to bother me. It's the fact that experienced players who I see regularly at the casinos still misplay lots of hands.
Just today I saw a man put up a $500 bet. ... (read more)
Money Management Cannot Help You Win at Gambling13 January 2007
I was reading some posts in one of the gambling chatrooms on the internet and people were expressing their various money management techniques for playing casino games. Each poster took turns describing his own self-styled method of "turning the odds in his favor".
One person emphasized the importance of quitting while ahead. ... (read more)
Poker strategy is packed with psychological dilemmas6 January 2007
Poker is the only casino game that you play against the other players. What makes it even more unique however, is the fact that's also the only game which involves psychology in its strategy – and lots of it. All other casino games are made up entirely of mathematical odds. Poker involves odds too, and using them wisely is essential for survival. ... (read more)
Most Gamblers Underestimate the Effects of Luck22 December 2006
My imaginary friend Eddie has been playing blackjack for many years. He's a pretty good basic strategy player, but not perfect. Eddie still has trouble playing his soft hits and soft doubles correctly, and he's foggy on some of the trickier splits. Based on the overall caliber of his game though, I'd say ... (read more)
It Doesn't Matter How Much You Have Invested in the Pot15 December 2006
I was playing Limit Texas Hold'em poker and just flat called right "under the gun" (first player to act after the blinds). I had K/Q offsuit. Four more players limped in behind me as well as the big blind, who was essentially getting to see a free flop. With a six-player pot, the flop came down:

The big blind checked and so did I. ... (read more)
Blackjack Is a Game of Perfection9 December 2006
Last time we talked about what a complex game live poker is and how nobody plays error-free poker. Everybody sometimes misreads what they think their opponent has, everybody sometimes calls when they should fold, and everybody sometimes checks when they should bet. Still and all, you'll be okay if you just ... (read more)
Unlike blackjack, poker is a game of mistakes1 December 2006
Practically speaking, blackjack and live poker are the only two "beatable" games in the casino. But the tools you need to win at each game are different as night and day.
Winning strategy at casino blackjack is quite an exact science. When you have 14 against the dealer's 5 up, for example, you should definitely stand every time, no matter what dealer you're up against. ... (read more)
Inquiring blackjack and poker players want to know18 November 2006
It's about time to catch up on some poker and blackjack questions I've received over the past few months.
Lately I've been seeing a new blackjack option called "Casino Surrender" at some casinos. It's not the old surrender option, but works kind of in reverse of that. Is this a decent bet for the ... (read more)
You Need a Better Poker Hand to Call Than to Bet11 November 2006
If, like a lot of other people, you're getting into the strategic aspects of playing winning poker, there's a basic truth you need to learn right up front. That truth is that it takes a better hand to call somebody's bet than it would've taken to make the bet yourself.
This may sound like doubletalk at ... (read more)
Blackjack Quiz Answers Separate Contenders from Pretenders22 October 2006
If you took the blackjack IQ test in my last column, this is your moment of truth. The correct answers appear below. Figure that 22 points out of 34 makes you a legitimate player. Any less and you're a sadly misguided player.
1) a - A soft hand is one that contains an Ace counted as 11. ... (read more)
