Lay Bets

4 May 2007
A few weeks ago, Frank Scoblete forwarded an email from a reader, Stanley Whittaker, to me. It seems that Stanley had written asking for information about Lay Bets in Craps. The letter ended up in the hands of somebody named Fred whose title is Marketing Manager. Fred's response was the ... (read more)

Those Pesky Low Pairs in 9/6 Jacks

6 April 2007
Whenever I play 9/6 Jacks Video Poker I am always troubled by three things: Missing them seems to be my most frequent error. They seem to occur with a greater frequency than I would have guessed. Even though they are listed quite high on the strategy table, they seldom seem to lead to anything ... (read more)

Speed count revisited

2 March 2007
Back in April of 2004 I wrote an article on this site entitled Blackjack Speed Count. The article gave a description of the properties of Speed Count including the edge a player using it could expect, as well as the fact that it is harder to detect than most other counts because a player will make increased wagers at times that other counts would not dictate. ... Frugal Video Poker (The Book)

2 February 2007
Back in February of 2004 I wrote a review entitled Frugal Video Poker, which was the name of a computer program written by Jim Wolf and marketed by Jean Scott (you can check out my review in the archives on this site). Now Jean has teamed up with Viktor Nacht and written a book with the same ... (read more)

What Goes Around...

5 January 2007
Comes around? Right! The other day I was cleaning out some old files and I came across an old parchment certificate from the Sahara Hotel entitled Certificate of Participation. It said: "Be it known that Donald Catlin did this date participate as a contestant in the First World Championship of Blackjack Tournament held at Del Webb's Sahara Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada. ... Sample size

3 December 2006
Hi Frank, I recently re-read your book Beat the Craps out of the Casinos before I took a trip to Tunica for some entertainment, gambling, and visiting with family. As always the 5 count eliminates those rollers who won't make any money for me anyway and greatly enhances my chances of having a bankroll to wait at the table until it warms up. ... (read more)

Good Deal?

5 November 2006
One of the current popular game shows on TV is the show Deal or No Deal hosted by comedian Howie Mandel. The format is that 26 briefcases are carried onto the stage by 26 beautiful young women. Each case contains a dollar figure ranging from one cent up to a million or more. The contestant chooses one of these cases and it is set aside; this is called the player's case. ... (read more)

Video Poker in Downtown Las Vegas

1 October 2006
I was recently in Las Vegas to attend Frank's World Craps Championship. This was a very successful event and you can read about it in Frank's July 31st article on this web site. I'll have some observations on it in a future article. Anyway, after the event I stayed in downtown Las Vegas for a few extra days and spent some of my time poking around trying to find decent Video Poker. ... (read more)

The Liberty Bell and the Liberty Belle: An Interview with Marshall Fey (Part 2)

2 September 2006
On May 26th of this year I interviewed Marshall Fey at Harrah's in Reno, Nevada. Last month the first part of the interview appeared along with some background material. Before you read this second part I encourage you to go back and read Part 1 if you haven't already done so; it will help put what ... (read more)

The Liberty Bell and the Liberty Belle: An Interview with Marshall Fey - Part I

5 August 2006
In 1885 a Bavarian immigrant by the name of Charles Fey arrived in San Francisco. In Bavaria, at age 14, Fey had operated a lathe at the farm tool factory of the Munich Plow Company. He later added to his mechanical skills when he worked at a ship yard in England so that when he arrived in San Francisco he had saleable skills. ... (read more)
