Martha, Here's Craps - Part 2

1 July 2006
Well Martha, by now you've had a whole month to digest the material in my last month's article on barracks, alley, backroom, and so on, Craps. You know what a comeout roll is, what a natural is, what craps are, and what a point is. You know what a seven out is and what making a point means. Most of all, you now know what it means to make a pass and what don't pass means. ... (read more)

Martha, Here's Craps - Part 1

3 June 2006
Okay, so who's Martha? Well, you'll recall that my last article was about gambling in Australia and New Zealand. Organizing a trip like that, halfway around the world, is no trivial matter; one needs a really good travel agent. Martha is my really good travel agent. When I returned from my trip I had ... Gambling Down Under

6 May 2006
G'day mate! Do you know what a bison is? It's what an Austrylian washes his fyce in! Yeah, it's a different language, that's for sure. I discovered this on a recent three-week tour of Australia and New Zealand taken by my wife, Mary, and me. The misunderstanding involved slot machines, of all things, ... (read more)

Sixteen Versus Seven

1 April 2006
I often read the column of my friend and colleague John Brokopp, who also writes for this site. John recently had a series of columns devoted to interviews with a successful Blackjack player identified only as Mr. Aces. In John's February 8, 2006 article he asked Mr. Aces if he used Basic Strategy all the time. ... (read more)

Playing for Comps

4 March 2006
My wife and I recently took an overnight at a casino near us and the experience, not the casino, brought back some fond memories of my favorite casino. That casino was the top floor of the old Playboy casino, later named the Atlantis, located in Atlantic City. The Playboy/Atlantis casino was patterned ... (read more)

Golden Touch Craps

4 February 2006
There is a lot of buzz these days about controlled shooting in the game of craps. Some folks think it is a lot of crap and voice their opinion in about as cocky and obnoxious a manner as I have ever seen. Others, like me, believe it is a skill that is possible to achieve but does require a lot of instruction and practice. ... (read more)

Is Craps the Best Game?

8 January 2006
I recently received the following letter via email: Hi, Don, I have been reading some of your articles and noticed that you were almost a neighbor of mine. I live in Connecticut and would venture to guess that we might be about the same age. I have been interested in craps but don't get to the casinos all that often. ... (read more)

Selling Dreams

3 December 2005
Former Yankee catcher Yogi Bera is reputed to have said, "I never make predictions, especially about the future." Well, I tend to agree with Yogi, however if a couple of years ago someone would have asked me if I thought my name would be appearing in Woman's World magazine, I would have told them that they were crazy. ... Length of a Craps Roll - Again!

4 November 2005
I recently received the following email message: Dear Don, A while ago I read that the average number of rolls until a seven-out in craps is around 8.5. I was a math major in college and decided to try and see if I could verify this myself. I set up an eight state Markov chain with one absorbing state, the seven-out. ... (read more)

Money Management

1 October 2005
Whenever I see the term "Money Management" a red flag goes off in my head. Although some writers using the term do have sound advice on handling a gambling stake, many others that use the term just have harebrained suggestions of betting in patterns that presumably can make one a sure winner at a negative game. ...
