Speed count revisited2 March 2007
Back in April of 2004 I wrote an article on this site entitled Blackjack Speed Count. The article gave a description of the properties of Speed Count including the edge a player using it could expect, as well as the fact that it is harder to detect than most other counts because a player will make increased wagers at times that other counts would not dictate. Everything I wrote in that article still holds (you can look it up in the archives) -- except for one thing. At the time I wrote that article the only way to learn Speed Count was to enroll in one of the Golden Touch Blackjack seminars. That is no longer the case. This past year Frank Scoblete wrote a new book entitled Golden Touch Blackjack Revolution. This book is a really good deal in my opinion. Not only will you learn how to adapt Speed Count to various blackjack situations (number of decks and player's rules) but there is a lot more information as well. Frank takes you step by step through such fine points as where to sit, Insurance and departure strategies, conservative and aggressive betting, bankroll and risk of ruin, and disguising your skills. All of these topics are useful and important, however in my opinion one of the most useful discussions in the book are Frank's step-by-step instructions about how to actually count when you are at the table with other players. Frank thought this through carefully and, quite frankly, some of his tips are things that I hadn't thought about or, I'm ashamed to admit, employed in my own game. There is something else. A CD comes with the book. The CD contains software that will help you memorize the version of Basic that accompanies Speed Count and also a practice mode that enables you to test your memory in random situations. The book also provides information about other products related to Speed Count that one can purchase. If you purchase this book I'm sure that you will enjoy it and enjoy playing blackjack using the information provided. See you next month.
