Slot Answers

3 September 2005
As you have probably gathered from reading my columns, I am not a slot player. As a result, I try not to dole out advice on something with which I am not that familiar. Oh yeah, I know how they work, I know what a par sheet is, I know what an RNG is, and so on. But I don't have that gut instinct about this game or that game because I really don't pay that much attention to them. ... (read more)

Table Comps at the Las Vegas Hilton

6 August 2005
If you are a table player I think you might find the following letter of interest. In particular, it might be worth your while to investigate the comping policy at the casino where you usually play just as I did. I believe the letter is self explanatory. May 17, 2005 Mr. Pablo Gatti ... (read more)

Frequency Frustration

3 July 2005
A few months ago I received an email from a gent called Bob Ciaffone. It seems that Bob had invented a new game called "Compare" but he wanted some help in ranking hands. Since I don't know what the legal status of Bob's game is at the moment, I won't describe it here other than to say it ... (read more)

Some Gambler's Ruin Questions - Part 2

4 June 2005
Last month I addressed a Gambler's Ruin problem that was raised by one of my readers, Ralph Scalitzia. You can refer to that article by scrolling back through recent articles on this site. The question raised there was a standard Gambler's Ruin problem and I gave the solution without any explanation of how one arrives at such. ... (read more)

Some Gambler's Ruin Questions

1 May 2005
One of my readers, Ralph Scalitzia, sent me the following email after an earlier response to one of his questions: Dear Dr. Catlin, Thank you very much for your help and informative replies. What I am interested in knowing is which of the following betting scenarios has the lowest Gambler's Ruin probability: Case (1): Initial capital 50, goal 51, betting one dollar at a time. ... Flush Meandering

15 April 2005
I'm sure we all make mistakes playing Video Poker; I know I do. Not too long ago I was playing 9/6 Jacks and was dealt 2H, AC, KD, JD, 2S. Well that King and Jack two-card Royal leapt right off the screen at me and before I knew it I was drawing three to it. Wrong! Now I do a lot of stupid things but for once this wasn't stupidity. ... Three Card Poker Rankings

6 March 2005
This month I want to use the material we developed in my January article to explain how one arrives at the rankings in the game of Three Card Poker. Although these rankings have frequently been listed by me and others, you now have the mathematical tools to explain just how one arrives at them. Before we ... (read more)

Keno

13 February 2005
Judging from the sizes of Keno lounges, the casino game of Keno is not as popular with casino players as it once was. Still many people play the game and many, many more are now playing it in connection with state lotteries. In my own state (Massachusetts) one can play Keno at selected bar rooms every four minutes from 5:00 PM until the bar closes. ... (read more)

Combinations

2 January 2005
In my next three articles I am going to look at some games that require the the notion of a combination. I derived this formula in an article I wrote a couple of years ago, but thought it would be a good idea to derive it again and get everyone up to speed before I write these articles. We begin, not with a combination, but with the idea of a permutation. ... (read more)

Mind Play? Maybe Not

4 December 2004
I generally stay at the Las Vegas Hilton when I'm in Las Vegas. It is by no means the best hotel in town nor is it the best place to play, but it is right next to the Las Vegas Convention Center and that is a big plus in my book. That is not to say that you can't find some good games at the Hilton. ... (read more)
