Top 10 casino opening and expansions for winter 2022

31 January 2022

Despite the lingering COVID-19 pandemic, many casinos and resorts across the U.S. have powered through the rough times over the last few years and have even shown signs of growth.

As we try to get back to our normal ways of living, so has the gaming industry. Here we take a look at 10 new openings and expansions since our last edition.

10. Caviar Bar opens at Resorts World Las Vegas
Michelin-starred chef Shaun Hergatt’s Caviar Bar opened its doors to guests at Resorts World Las Vegas in December.

With a dynamic menu of fresh seafood dishes that incorporate seasonal ingredients, in addition to international caviar selections, Caviar Bar’s luxe interior and intimate atmosphere makes it a true jewel box within the Las Vegas Strip.

Guests can choose to order a tin to start or incorporate the caviar into the rest of the menu, which includes a selection of house-cured meats, fine cheeses, fresh seafood dishes, bites, large plates and more.

9. North Carolina casino unveils expansion
An expanded pre-launch facility with an additional 500 gaming machines — including electronic table games offering blackjack, roulette, craps and baccarat —opened mid-December at the Catawba Two Kings Casino in Kings Mountain, North Carolina.

The temporary casino now features 1,000 gaming machines, including 954 traditional slot machines and 46 positions at four automated electronic table game pods in a “stadium” setup.

With the expansion, the casino also added a dedicated high-limit room offering guests added privacy and personal service.

The Catawba Nation and its consultants are continuing planning work on the permanent casino resort project, which will be announced at a later date.

8. New sports experience at Ocean Resort Casino
Ocean Resort Casino will begin construction in March of a new venue that will blend an entertaining bar, lounge and gaming experience with sports wagering. The $4 million concept is scheduled to make its debut this summer at the Atlantic City property.

“As Ocean continues to strengthen its position within Atlantic City, we are steadfastly dedicated to property growth and development,” said Bill Callahan, Interim Chief Executive Officer for Ocean Casino Resort. “We are excited by the new venue’s central location and the ability to advance our product with an innovative experience for our guests to enjoy. Partnering with USBookmaking allows us to capitalize on their expertise to bolster our land-based wagering product.”

More information, including timeline, concept, and design details, will be announced later this year.

7. Sam’s Town Shreveport opening FanDuel Sportsbook
On 14 January, Sam's Town Hotel & Casino Shreveport in Louisiana held the grand opening of its all-new FanDuel Sportsbook, the first sportsbook to open in Shreveport.

The newly designed 1,466 square-foot retail location features three live betting windows, multiple self-service betting terminals and multiple video displays.

The sportsbook is conveniently located in the atrium, and is open Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. CST and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. CST.

6. Peter Luger Steak House to open at Caesars Palace
Legendary New York Steak House Peter Luger is coming to Caesars Palace in Las Vegas at the end of 2022. It will be the first U.S. location outside of New York.

"We're thrilled to be bringing Peter Luger to Caesars Palace. It was critical for us to be able to bring to Las Vegas the same menu, the same ambiance and—most important—the same quality beef that we are known for in New York, and Caesars was aligned with that vision," said Amy Rubenstein, the President of Peter Luger. "Our two iconic brands have rich and celebrated histories, and we could not imagine a better partner in Las Vegas."

Ensuring only the very finest cuts of beef make it to the restaurant's storied, oak-top tables, the family owners still follow in matriarch Marsha Forman's tradition of visiting the New York meat markets, where they hand-select only the very best from an already narrow selection of USDA Prime beef.

Peter Luger Steak House Las Vegas will be located near MR CHOW.

5. Rosie’s Gaming Emporium now open in Virginia
At a ceremonial outdoor and socially distanced ribbon cutting, Colonial Downs Group on 8 January, the company announced that Rosie's Gaming Emporium is now open in Dumfries, Virginia.

Rosie’s features 150 slots-like gaming machines, simulcast horse racing, restaurant and bar. Rosie’s in Dumfries is open Sunday – Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. and Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 a.m.

Aaron Gomes, chief operating officer of Colonial Downs Group, said, “It is very exciting to be opening our fifth Rosie’s in Virginia. The opening of this Rosie’s adds to our tremendous success in Virginia and enters us into Northern Virginia. The Dumfries location builds on our commitment to create more than one thousand jobs and generate significant tax revenues across the Commonwealth by bringing together gaming enthusiasts and the community to experience an exciting and fun activity.”

4. New casino coming to Cumberland County in Pennsylvania
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board voted unanimously on 19 January to award a license to Greenwood Gaming & Entertainment, Inc, operator of Parx Casino, to construct a Category 4 casino in Shippensburg Township, Cumberland County.

A Category 4 Slot Machine License permits the entity to operate between 300 and 750 slot machines. The entity could also petition for permission to initially operate up to 30 table games for an additional fee of $2.5 million with the capability of adding an additional 10 tables games after its first year of operation. That table games certificate was also approved by the Board at its public meeting.

The 73,000 square foot Parx Casino Shippensburg will offer 500 slot machines, electronic table games and a restaurant and sports bar facility.

The casino also plans to offer sports wagering in the future.

3. BetMGM Sportsbook to open at Arizona Cardinals stadium
BetMGM and the Arizona Cardinals have released initial images of the nearly 17,000-square-foot BetMGM Sportsbook scheduled to open on the State Farm Stadium campus in time for kickoff of the 2022 football season. This opening will mark the first sportsbook at an NFL stadium.

Guests will experience a massive video wall to watch games, enhanced gameday parking options, as well as both indoor and outdoor dining options. Sports fans will be able to place wagers at trading windows or utilize user-friendly betting kiosks conveniently placed throughout the space.

The 16,800-square-foot BetMGM Sportsbook will seat 500 and feature more than 25 betting kiosks, a 265-square-foot Video Wall and 38 additional TVs.

2. Choctaw Nation announces new resort development in Oklahoma
On 14 January, the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma announced it will open an entertainment and resort development in Hochatown, Oklahoma.

The four-story, 202,000 square-foot development will include 100 hotel rooms, 600 slot machines, eight table games, several restaurants and bars, a pool, an outdoor venue with an amphitheater, beer garden and a family-friendly game zone.

The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma anticipates breaking ground in the spring of 2022 with an expected completion date of fall of 2023.

"We are thrilled to add a new entertainment venue to the region that is unlike any other in the state. From parents to children, this will offer something for everyone in the family,” states Janie Dillard, Senior Executive Officer, for the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.

1. Grand opening of Hollywood Casino Morgantown
December 22 marked the grand opening of Hollywood Casino Morgantown, the fourth gaming and entertainment facility in Pennsylvania by Penn National Gaming. The $111 million state-of-the-art casino is the company’s 44th property in North America.

Guests can experience 750 of the newest slot machines, 30 table games, a retail Barstool Sportsbook, upscale casual dining and more.

Hollywood Casino Morgantown’s gaming floor features 750 of the latest video reel slot and video poker machines, as well as 30 exciting table games, including blackjack, craps, roulette, baccarat and more. All gaming at Hollywood Casino Morgantown is also outfitted with Penn National’s cashless, cardless and contactless capabilities.
