Big Fight Sponsorships Suit Caesars In Tunica

11 August 2004
With three casinos in Tunica Resorts, Caesars Entertainment has a big presence and it easily follows that sponsorship of big events, like the Roy Jones vs Glenn Johnson IBF light heavyweight world champion match, is a natural fit. While the fight is being held in Memphis at the new FedExForum and ... (read more)

Heard it on the River

2 August 2004
This hasn't been confirmed but we heard that GRAND CASINO, who stepped up to sponsor the LEWIS-TYSON fight two years ago, will again answer the bell and be the major sponsor for the ROY JONES-GLENN JOHSON IBF light heavyweight championship this September in the FEDEXFORUM. It would appear that Tunica would also be the site of training camps for both boxers. ... (read more)

Heard it on the River

9 July 2004
Funny thing about timing. I pursue Horseshoe Boss JACK BINION for an exclusive interview for over a year and return from a respite on the RED RIVER in Arkansas to find out that what I had predicted earlier in this column, that HARRAH'S ENTERTAINMENT would complete its acquisition of HORSESHOE GAMING on or about July 1, had taken place. ... Heard it on the River

25 June 2004
You first read about the Canadians coming south from oil-rich Alberta to chip-rich Tunica Resorts in this column and now that the Mississippi Gaming Commission has approved them moving forward on the road to build a casino complex here, it now is a case of "show me the money." MYRIAD WORLD RESORTS was ... (read more)

Heard it on the River

14 June 2004
This is somewhat hard to imagine but if it were to occur, it would it transform TUNICA COUNTY into a real hot destination. We heard, you have also, that Myriad Gold from Edmonton, Alberta in Canada not only has applied to the state gaming commission for a casino site here off Indian Mound Road but that ... (read more)

Grand Blackjack to Sizzle in July

4 June 2004
July is expected to produce very hot temperatures for the South but in Tunica it will be even hotter with Grand Casino's $100,000 Sizzling Hot Blackjack Tournament. The event is another in Grand's successful blackjack tournament series and will be a two-day event on July 9 and 10. An earlier one this year, also for $100,000, attracted a strong field. ... Heard it on the River

24 May 2004
Lots of great news coming out of TUNICA RESORTS in recent days such as a $65 million waterpark, grand opening of the TUNICA NATIONAL GOLF & TENNIS CLUB, two new casino filings for licenses, and an option exercised to buy over 500 acres for a motor sports complex that could eventually cost $100 million. ... RIVER POKER TOUR AT SAM'S TOWN

24 May 2004
The new and growing River Poker Tour, Mississippi's no-limit Texas Hold 'em competition, will stage its second event at Sam's Town June 4-6 following the successful debut of the Tour earlier at Grand Casino. "We had such a successful start with our first event that we wanted to play this one in ... (read more)

Heard it on the River

7 May 2004
Just got back from the 11th annual SOUTHERN GAMING SUMMIT that was well attended by Tunica gaming execs and more than 5,000 other folks, not to mention 200 or so exhibitors. Presented by ASCEND MEDIA GAMING GROUP and the GULF COAST GAMING ASSOCIATION, this event gets better and bigger every year. ... (read more)

Heard it on the River

23 April 2004
GOV. HALEY BARBOUR is known, we have heard, to have three positions on the state's gaming…no gaming expansion beyond the present counties, no lottery and no raising of gaming taxes. Sounds good to me and I think the industry will take comfort on those issues. Speaking of lotteries, don't hear much from ... (read more)
