Woman sues for jackpot from faulty slot machine

SAN JUAN PUEBLO, New Mexico -- As reported by the (Santa Fe) New Mexican: "A penny slot machine at Ohkay Casino Resort and Hotel told Jody Montoya of La Mesilla she won $1.6 million, but casino officials registered a different message after they inspected the machine.

"They told Montoya the machine had malfunctioned and she had won nothing.

"Tim Butler, a Santa Fe lawyer representing Montoya, said she has demanded the Ohkay Owingeh casino pay her the full amount. "The bottom line is that she played the machine, she won the jackpot, and they have refused to pay at this time," Butler said.

"...Casino spokeswoman Stephine Poston said the penny slot machine that Montoya played Dec. 9 has a top payout of $1,500, and when casino officials inspected the machine, it showed no winning combination had been registered.

"...Montoya is waiting until investigations by the slot machine company and the Tribal Gaming Commission are finished before deciding whether to proceed with a lawsuit, Butler said..."
