Wichita Could Get Destination Casino28 January 2005TOPEKA, Kansas – As reported by the Wichita Eagle: "Wichita is one of three locations where voters could approve a destination casino under a bill to be introduced next week by a coalition of gambling promoters. "The proposal would guarantee the state more than $100 million in up-front payments next year, said Doug Lawrence, lobbyist for the Kansas Greyhound Association. "Lawmakers are looking for ways to provide additional money for schools to comply with a Kansas Supreme Court ruling. On Jan. 3, the court ruled that the Legislature is not fulfilling its constitutional obligation to adequately pay for schools. "The coalition's plan would allow casinos -- if voters in each city approved -- in Wichita, Kansas City and southeast Kansas, either Pittsburg or Galena. Long-term, the casinos would generate more than $200 million a year for the state, Lawrence said. "It also would allow video lottery terminals -- similar to slot machines -- at parimutuel tracks, including Wichita Greyhound Park. The Wichita casino, however, would not necessarily be located at the racetrack, Lawrence said…" |
