Vancouver Holds Public Meeting for Slots at Track8 July 2004VANCOUVER, British Columbia – As reported by the Vancouver West Ender: "The Stop the Slots campaigners are calling it 'Our Last Chance.' "And city council is planning to lend its collective ear to the public on the contentious issue of slot machines making an appearrance at Hastings Racecourse. Council is considering the installation of 600 of the machines at the track with the possibility of 300 more in future years. Slot and track supporters are expected to show up in droves with these arguments: the track won't survive without them, think of all the lost jobs, we'll be able to create more jobs with the extra money, the track is a valuable part of Vancouver's heritage, gambling is not addictive, think of all the extra gambling revenue for the city. "Those opposed, including community residents riled that all their lawn signs are being pilfered (how's that for an increase in crime) and anti-gambling expansion leader Bill Chu, will point outparks are not the place for casinos, crime will increase as will social costs associated with gambling addiction, and local business will feel the loss as folks fritter away their hard-earned dollars on the slots rather than on local services and merchandise…" |
