Tropicana damage control backfires

30 November 2007

NEW JERSEY -- As reported by the New Jersey Star Ledger: "Tropicana officials attempted yesterday to refute damaging testimony from a former casino president during a regulatory hearing on whether the company can hold on to its New Jersey casino license.

"But instead of damage control, the Tropicana faced more allegations of a casino that was unclean, provided poor service and drove its customers away.

"The evidence: A 15-page letter from the National Environmental Health Association complaining of everything from roaches and bedbugs to lack of Internet access -- which the casino still charged guests for -- to a maid caught eating the leftovers of a room service meal during its June convention.

"...Tropicana President Mark Giannantonio said the group never complained during the convention and wrote the letter to get out of paying its remaining $22,000 bill.

"But the Casino Control Commission, which acts as the judge in licensing matters, was skeptical.

"...The Division of Gaming Enforcement, which acts as a prosecutor, has charged the casino with resisting complying with regulations and cited it with violations. It also has raised customer complaints of poor service and filthy conditions since the casino laid off one-quarter of its work force this year."
