Resorts Atlantic City celebrates 30th anniversary

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey -- As reported by the New Jersey Post Courier: "Thanks to a little known paint company with a vision, Resorts became the first casino to open in Atlantic City in 1978.

"Back in the 1960s, the Mary Carter Paint Co. acquired property in the Bahamas that resulted in hotels and a casino on Paradise Island. By the end of the decade, Mary Carter morphed into Resorts International. In the 1970s, the company purchased the Leeds & Lippincott Co., which owned Chalfont-Haddon Hall, an ocean front hotel in Atlantic City with 1,000 rooms, dating to 1917. Resorts gambled that the rundown hotel could be transformed by legalizing gambling in Atlantic City. The company pumped big bucks into the referendum in 1978 which approved casinos for Atlantic City.

"On May 26, 1978, the paint company's bet paid off.

"Resorts Atlantic City will celebrate 30 years of gaming with a four-day extravaganza beginning Friday. The anniversary celebration will begin with a fireworks display, followed by two performances by Natalie Cole, a festive public block party, an aerial sky diving stunt and numerous themed promotions and giveaways.

"...The festivities kick off with fireworks from the rooftop of Resorts. The party then will move inside to Boogie Nights with special guest host DJ Big Joe Henry, from NJ 101.5-FM. The music, decor and tribute artists will transform Boogie Nights into a 1970's lounge.

"On Saturday and Sunday, Resorts welcomes Natalie Cole to the Superstar Theater for shows at 8 p.m. both nights. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at (800) 736-1420 or online at www.ticketmaster.com

"Sunday, Resorts will give away 30 flat screen televisions every hour from 2 to 11 p.m. To be eligible, players can earn points by playing their favorite casino games using a Resorts Destination Casino Club card up to Saturday.

"Resorts will cap off the weekend Monday with an aerial spectacular performed by Freefall Adventures..."
