Pollock wins WSOP PLO title, $279,43115 June 2013Joshua Pollock outplayed and ultimately outlasted a marvelously talented and intriguing lineup of would-be champions in the $1,500 buy-in Pot-Limit Omaha event at the World Series of Poker, winning his first WSOP bracelet and $279,431 on Friday night. "I never thought I'd win a gold bracelet because I don't play many tournaments," said Pollock. "But it's awesome to win one in PLO, because that's my favorite game." The 29-year-old poker pro now residing in San Diego topped a big field of 1,022 players. The finale of the three-day competition included several chip lead changes and a surprising finish, especially considering the way eventual runner-up Noah Schwartz dominated much of the final two days of the tournament. The victory seemed to be Schwartz' numerous times. However, Pollock enjoyed a late rush and overcame a 3-to-1 chip disadvantage when playing heads-up, and eventually came to enjoy his most satisfying poker accomplishment to date. Pollock has been playing poker full time professionally since 2006. He is originally from the Washington, D.C. suburb of Silver Spring, Md. Pollock attended the University of Maryland, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. He moved to Las Vegas in 2009 where he played poker professionally both live and online, before relocating to San Diego where he lives with a group of fellow poker players. Schwartz claimed $172,931 for second place, while James Park won $108,196 for third. Makich Park was fourth, Shawn Silber was fifth, Eric Shanks was sixth, Nicholas Blumenthal was seventh, David Greene finished eighth and Brandon Crawford was the first to bust form the final table, finishing ninth. The top 117 players finished in the money. Notable players who cashed but did not make the final table included Hoyt Corkins (27th), Nick Binger (60th), Berry Johnston (81st), Joseph Cheong (93rd), Lee Watkinson (96th), Leif Force (99th), Max Pescatori (104th), Ross Boatman (113th) and David Sklansky (114th). Johnston's cash was the 63rd in his WSOP career, which ties him for sixth on the career cashes list. Tournament recap modified from a report by WSOP Media Director Nolan Dalla, used by permission. |
