Oklahoma poker pro wins WSOP Omaha title, $361K19 June 2012Gabe Scott, a professional poker player from Norman, Okla., won the $3,000 Pot-Limit Omaha event at the World Series of Poker on Thursday, claiming his first gold bracelet and the $361,797 first-place prize at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. The 23-year-old overcame a significant chip disadvantage during the later stages of competition and managed to defeat a formidable final table lineup that included several outstanding international players -- including Vadzim Kursevich (Belarus, third), Huykheim Nguyen (Germany, fifth), and Thomas Pettersson (Sweden, ninth). Also in the final table hunt were Brett Richey (second), Scott Stanko (fourth), Tom Chambers (sixth), Romik Vartzar (seventh), and two-time gold bracelet winner Russ "Dutch" Boyd (eighth). This was Scott’s second time to cash in a WSOP event. Proving this year’s victory was no fluke, he final tabled the same event in 2011, finishing in eighth place. Richey claimed $223,492, while Kursevich won $158,530 and Stanko claimed $114,037. Sixty-three players in the 589-player field finished in the money. Noteable players who cashed but did not make the final table included: Robert Williamson III (11th), John Racener (13th), Erik Seidel (18th), Chino Rheem (23rd), Joe Beevers (25th), Sam Stein (35th), Ted Lawson (36th), Padraig Parkinson (46th), Isaac Haxton (55th), Tex Barch (58th) and Shawn Buchanan (62nd). Attendance in this event dropped more than 14 percent from last year's turnout of 685 players. Modified from tournament notes provided by WSOP Media Director Nolan Dalla. |
