Officials Downplay TB at Casino

DETROIT, Michigan – As reported by the Detroit News: "Health officials insist there's no cause for widespread worry, but many gamblers aren't taking any chances after the confirmation of a case of tuberculosis at MotorCity Casino.

"By midafternoon Tuesday, the casino's parking lot was half-empty as word spread that a kitchen worker tested positive for the contagious disease.

"…A person described as a kitchen utility worker tested positive last month. So far, the Detroit Health Department has tested 38 co-workers and plans to screen another 15.

"None has tested positive for the disease that's often spread by coughing and usually attacks the lungs.

"The case is one of 82 this year in Detroit, but it comes just days after another at nearby John Deiter school center.

"MotorCity Casino employs more than 2,000 workers and serves more than 12,000 gamblers a day.

"…Although the employee worked in the kitchen handling dishes, the public shouldn't worry because TB, which is treated with antibiotics, can't be passed on objects like plates, [Dr. Kathy Harris of the Detroit Health Department] said. Those at risk need to be in close contact with carriers for 30 days or more.

"Casino workers are still terrified, said Kathryn Lewis, a housekeeper. She said the casino still hasn't discussed the situation or the tests with its employees…"
