Mohegan Sun CEO: Tourism Helps Casino Growth

CONNECTICUT – As reported by the Connecticut Day: " The chief executive of the Mohegan Sun casino says the region's multibillion-dollar tourism industry has provided a solid foundation for the continued growth of casinos in eastern Connecticut.

"Mitchell Etess, Mohegan Sun's president and CEO, told a marketing forum of the Mystic Coast & Country Travel Industry Association that 'one of the reasons the casinos fit so well in this part of the state is that there was always tourism in this area.'

"…The region's two large casinos, Foxwoods Resort Casino and the nearby Mohegan Sun casino, attract tens of thousands of visitors daily. Since opening during the past decade, the casinos have developed a loyal clientele who travel directly to the casinos for their gaming and entertainment attractions.

"But Etess said there is a growing crossover between casino patrons and the region's tourism industry, whose assets range from the sandy shoreline beaches of southeastern Connecticut to the historic homes and bed & breakfasts scattered across the more rural eastern Connecticut.

"Etess said he recognizes that competition beyond Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods could arrive in New England, especially with pressure growing for gaming in Rhode Island. But he expressed confidence his institution could weather newly arriving competition…"
