Michigan iGaming, sports betting operators generate $175.4 million in August

(PRESS RELEASE) -- Michigan commercial and tribal operators reported a combined $175.4 million total internet gaming (iGaming) gross receipts and gross sports betting receipts in August. Gross receipts decreased 0.4% compared to July results.

August iGaming gross receipts totaled $152.2 million and gross sports betting receipts totaled $23.2 million. In July 2023, iGaming gross receipts were $153.6 million and gross sports betting receipts were $22.5 million.

Combined total iGaming and internet sports betting adjusted gross receipts (AGR) for August were $153.1 million, including $137.2 million from iGaming and $15.9 million from internet sports betting — representing a 0.7% and 3.0% decrease, respectively, compared to July 2023. Compared to August 2022 reported revenues, iGaming AGR was up by 16.8% and sports betting was down by 1.3%.

Total internet sports betting handle at $218.5 million was up by 8.8% from the $200.8 million handle recorded in July 2023.

The operators reported submitting $29.7 million in taxes and payments to the State of Michigan during August, including:

  • Internet gaming taxes and fees: $28.6 million
  • Internet sports betting taxes and fees: $1.1 million

The three Detroit casinos – MGM Grand Detroit Casino, Hollywood Casino at Greektown, and MotorCity Casino – reported paying the City of Detroit $7.3 million in wagering taxes and municipal services fees during August, including:

  • Internet gaming taxes and fees: $6.9 million
  • Internet sports betting taxes and fees: $368,596

Tribal operators reported making $3.6 million in payments to governing bodies in August.

During August, a total of 15 operators offered internet gaming and internet sports betting. As of 1 August, Odawa Casinos ceased their offering of internet sports betting, reducing the number of internet sports betting operators in the state to 14.
