MGM Grand, Tribe Spend Millions on Campaign28 September 2004MICHIGAN – As reported by the Detroit Free Press: "The owners of Detroit's MGM Grand Casino and Soaring Eagle in Mt. Pleasant have spent nearly $7 million in the opening rounds of the campaign to win voter approval of a constitutional amendment to limit the expansion of gambling in Michigan. "The Saginaw Chippewas, owners of the Soaring Eagle complex, led the way with donations of $3,543,477 to the Let Voters Decide campaign, according to reports filed Monday with state elections officials. "MGM was close behind at $3,189,386. Each was among the largest campaign donations in Michigan history. "…The proposal -- on the ballot for the Nov. 2 election -- would require approval of most new forms of gambling including video lottery games, by Michigan voters and those in the community targeted for the expansion. "…Opponents of the proposal -- a group that calls itself No Casino Monopoly: Vote No on Proposal 1 -- has raised and spent just more than $1 million, according to reports filed Monday…" |
