Meadows gets ready for opening

PENNSYLVANIA -- As reported by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette: "As hundreds of employees of The Meadows Racetrack & Casino prepare for opening of Southwestern Pennsylvania's first slots casino, they are being watched by engineers, auditors, attorneys, security enforcement agents and others from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

"Gaming board officials maintain a permanent presence to monitor operations at casinos once they open, but have broader responsibilities beforehand. Regulatory employees have been at the facility in North Strabane on a daily basis since May 14 to review preparations, and about 18 of them will be there every day through the June 5 opening. said Kevin Hayes, the board's assistant chief counsel for gaming operations.

"...Many of the facility's 425 new employees were undergoing training nearby on customer service and other issues, at the same time The Meadows started running its 'It's So Easy' advertising campaign, which emphasizes the accessibility of the casino a mile off of Interstate 79.

"The Washington County racetrack will be the fifth in Pennsylvania with slot machines, so state inspectors have been through these paces before with gaming operators -- making sure the gambling machines communicate with the board's central computer in Harrisburg, that the casino's in-house audit system is in place, that surveillance equipment to monitor all of the slots patrons and employees are functioning..."
