Hoosier Park Reports Purse Increase

24 September 2004

ANDERSON, Indiana – (PRESS RELEASE) -- Hoosier Park at Anderson has announced a purse increase of $1,000 per race for its Thoroughbred racing program. The increase took effect Wednesday, Sept. 22.

The increase is the result of conservative purse account management at the beginning of the meet. Also, fewer high-purse races have been carded each night due to increased competition for horses. As a result, purses paid have been lower than anticipated.

"Despite a decrease in handle, we've found that our purse projections were a little too conservative through the first three weeks of the meet," said Hoosier Park President and General Manager Rick Moore. "Also, the competition for horses to fill our top-purse races is very strong. As more jurisdictions pass alternative gaming legislation, the competition becomes even fiercer. Ideally, the increase in purses going forward may help us better compete for horses that might otherwise continue to race elsewhere."

Hoosier Park, a majority-owned property of Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN), also operates simulcast-wagering facilities in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Merrillville, Ind. Hoosier Park's Thoroughbred season will continue through Sunday, Nov. 21. Live racing is conducted Wednesday through Sunday with the first race going to post at 6:10 p.m. Information about Hoosier Park racing and all of its facilities can be found on the Internet at hoosierpark.com.
