Hoosier Park Increases Purse

ANDERSON, Indiana -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- Hoosier Park at Anderson has announced a 10-percent increase in its overnight race purses for the track's 2005 Thoroughbred Meet. The increase takes effect on Friday, Oct. 7.

The purse increase is the result of positive business factors as well as conservative purse account management at the beginning of the meet, which opened Sept. 3.

Through Sept. 30, Hoosier Park's starters per race averaged 9.71 horses, versus an average of 8.10 horses for the like period in 2004. Additionally, the track averaged 11.75 races per scheduled race card between Sept. 3 and Sept. 30, as opposed to an average of 11.0 races during the like period a year ago.

"Hoosier Park's ability to offer a strong racing program with attractive field sizes has contributed to increased sales of our Thoroughbred signal through the Churchill Downs Simulcast Network," said Hoosier Park President and General Manager Rick Moore. "We also enjoyed strong on-track business during the month of September.

"Additionally, Hoosier Park's racing department took a conservative approach to managing the purse account during the opening weeks of our Thoroughbred Meet," Moore continued. "That conservative management, along with current business levels, has allowed us to increase purses."

Hoosier Park, a majority-owned property of Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN), also operates simulcast-wagering facilities in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Merrillville, Ind. Hoosier Park's Standardbred season will continue through Saturday, June 25. Live racing is conducted Wednesday through Sunday with the first race going to post at 6:45 p.m.
