Higher Fines Proposed for Underage Gambling

8 May 2006

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Advertiser: "Fines have been proposed to stem a 600 per cent rise in the number of young people trying to gain entry to Adelaide's casino.

"SkyCity Adelaide security have turned away an average of 1800 underage people a month since the start of the year.

"This compared with 3500 for all of the 2003-04 financial year.

"Twelve young people who made it past security staff in the first three months of this year were detected and removed - just one fewer than the number ejected in 2003-04.

"…Minors who attempt to enter the casino are not fined but a juvenile apprehended inside faces a fine of up to $500 and the casino could be fined up to $10,000."
