Greektown to Layoff 100 Workers

DETROIT, Michigan – As reported by the Associated Press: "Greektown Casino announced Wednesday that it would lay off more than 100 workers in response to the Legislature's vote to raise the casino's tax by one-third.

"Greektown says it needs to cut the positions to compensate for the tax hike, which it estimates would cost the casino an extra $19 million to $20 million a year.

"Last week, the Senate voted 30-6 and the House 93-15 to approve a bill raising the tax on Detroit three casinos from 18 to 24 percent. The bill now goes to Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who encouraged House Democrats to support it, but has not yet signed it.

" 'This vote by the Legislature just caused a lot of families in the city of Detroit to be devastated,' said casino spokesman Roger Martin. 'We warned the legislators and the Granholm administration but no one listened.'

"Martin said the final number of layoffs could be higher, and would be announced next week…"
