Garden City outsources jobs

18 May 2007

ALIFORNIA -- As reported by the San Jose Mercury News: "To curb $2 million in losses, the Garden City Casino laid off one-fifth of its workforce this week and hired an outside company to run the restaurant at San Jose's oldest card club lauded by many for its food.

"The move stunned workers who had weathered the sale of the bankrupt club to new owners in March and believed their jobs were secure.

"... 'I wish we could keep everybody,' co-owner Eric Swallow said Thursday.

"Swallow said 20 out of the casino's 109 food workers were let go by a company he and his partners recently hired to run the restaurant and bar. Some of those laid off included part-time workers, he said.

"The casino's money-losing food operations raised suspicions that free food was being given to gamblers to keep them playing longer, a violation of city ordinances, Swallow said.

"But Richard Teng, the city's gaming administrator, said in the five years he's been with the city the card club has never incurred an infraction for giving away free food..."
