Fire Shuts Down Michigan Casino

2 March 2004

SAULT STE. MARIE, Michigan – As reported by the Sault Star: "Kewadin Casino shut its doors most of the day Saturday for the first time in its history, as crews sifted through heavy damage caused by an early-morning fire.

"The blaze, which started at the Kewadin corporation's headquarters on the second floor, also hospitalized two firefighters.

"…Flames were extinguished immediately but not before the south-side outdoor sign was damaged and the casino's sprinkler system had water-logged the Paradise gaming room directly below. Also soaked were the lobby containing Native American artwork and other office areas upstairs.

"…Fred Paquin, chief of the Sault Tribe Police and a member of the tribe's board of directors, predicted damage will be in the 'several tens of thousands' of dollars…"
