Defendant Sentenced in Casino Theft

LAKE TAHOE -- As reported by the Reno Gazette-Journal: "Having children ages 2 years and 3 months were not enough to keep out of prison a fourth defendant who helped steal $1.6 million from a Lake Tahoe casino, a judge decided Monday.

"Michelle A. Lawrence, 28, of Topeka, Kan., must serve at least one to five years in prison for her part in the theft of $1.6 million orchestrated by her husband, Douglas District Court Judge Michael Gibbons said.

"Gibbons said he did not know who would take care of Lawrence's children while she serves at least a year in prison.

"'This is a situation where a person should think about their children prior to committing an offense,' Gibbons said.

"Lawrence, who pleaded guilty to grand theft, is the fourth person sent to prison for part of a scam that stole $1.6 million Harveys Lake Tahoe between Dec. 31, 2002, and June 1, 2003.

"Her husband Jason Lawrence, 29, also of Topeka, received the stiffest sentence of four to 10 years in prison.

"...Jason Lawrence used his position as a Harveys Lake Tahoe pit boss to mark credit given to others as paid back when it wasn't. The others then cashed in their chips..."
