Davenport want tribe to run casino

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- As reported by the Quad-Cities Online: "The city's finance committee Thursday approved approaching the Meskwaki tribe about taking over the casino license used by the Rhythm City Casino in Davenport.

"But the head of the Riverboat Development Authority said it's unlikely such a deal would work.

"Ald. Bill Lynn, 5th Ward, proposed the city begin discussions with the Meskwaki to determine their interest level in operating a casino in Davenport. All of the committee members agreed.

"Mary Ellen Chamberlin, president of the Riverboat Development Authority, a not-for-profit community group that gets a share of casino revenues and holds the license used by the Rhythm City casino, said talks between the city and the casino were going fine until the public forums were held.

"...After hearing news that the city wants to talk with the Meskwaki, who own a casino in Tama, Iowa, Ms. Chamberlin said the law says that Indian tribes can only have a casino on tribal land they currently own. She added she didn't think they can buy land to build a new casino or lease an area for their casino..."
