Coquitlam casino liquor bylaw may be amended

COQUITLAM, British Columbia – As reported by the Tri-City News: "Gamblers may soon be able to sip a beer or cocktail between hands at Coquitlam's Boulevard Casino.

"Monday, Coquitlam city council gave first reading to a zoning bylaw amendment that would allow alcohol to be served in Boulevard's gaming areas. The casino has been licensed to sell booze in areas adjacent to the slot machines and gambling tables for just over a year.

"City staff recommended council approve the first step in the process based on existing 'strict controls and regulations' in place on licensing, inspections and serving alcohol in gaming facilities, which are monitored by the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch and the BC Lottery Corporation. The report also noted that the applicant, Great Canadian Casinos, already has programs in place to assist patrons with alcohol and gambling addictions.

"…There are currently 17 casinos in B.C.; eight are licensed to serve alcohol on the casino floor, four have service adjacent to the floor, three have no service in the casino and two have applied for service on or adjacent to the floor…"
