Connecticut Budget Helps Casino Town's Neighbors

10 February 2005

CONNECTICUT – As reported by the Connecticut Day: "Gov. M. Jodi Rell's proposed budget contains good and bad news for the towns surrounding the state's two Indian casinos, representatives here and across the region said Wednesday.

"Among the increases proposed in Rell's spending plan is an extra allocation of $1.25 million to the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Fund grant, which will be distributed to the five host towns closest to Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino.

"Norwich, Ledyard, Preston, Montville and North Stonington would each receive a grant of $250,000 under the proposal, in addition to the towns' regular disbursements from the grant and the impact bonuses to which the towns are entitled under the law.

"The five towns are already entitled to annual bonus payments of $500,000 above their regular grant amounts to offset expenses incurred by the increased traffic, housing and other burdens the two huge casinos create.

"…Officials in Norwich and Montville were also encouraged, but said the new funds would not fully cover the real costs associated with the two casinos.

"…But the news is not all good. New London would receive almost $58,000 less from the fund next year, under Rell's plan, and other surrounding towns will also lose money."
