Churchill Downs Offers Record Purse

KENTUCKY – As reported by the Thoroughbred Times: "A record $9.375-million in purses and five new races highlight Churchill Downs's 45-race stakes schedule this year.

"The stakes schedule, which will offer 33 stakes during the spring meeting and 12 during the fall meeting, surpasses the 2003 schedule that offered 41 events with purses totaling $8.575-million. Stakes purses for the spring meeting will total $7.025-million, an increase from $6.375-million offered in 2003. Stakes purses in the fall will climb to $2.35-million from $2.2-million last season.

"The crown jewel of the meeting, the 130th edition of the $1-million Kentucky Derby (G1) and its sister race the $500,000 Kentucky Oaks (G1) will be held on May 1 and April 30th, respectively.

"Four new stakes races have been added to the spring stakes schedule:

"…Churchill's spring meet runs from April 24 through July 5."
