Churchill Downs Fears Impact of Louisville Smoking Ban

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – As reported by the Courier-Journal: ``Churchill Downs has lost significant business to the Caesars casino in Southern Indiana and is 'extremely nervous' that a smoking ban in Louisville would drive even more people, and their entertainment dollars, across the river, according to Alex Waldrop, the track's senior vice president.

``Speaking yesterday to a Louisville Metro Council committee reviewing a proposed ordinance that would ban smoking in public places, Waldrop said the casino "sucks $125 million annually out of the Louisville economy." If a smoking ban is enacted, he said, the track would stand to lose more "attendance and handle."

```Please don't send smokers to Southern Indiana in the name of progress,' said Waldrop, who passed out a report indicating a negative impact on gambling business in cities that had enacted smoking prohibitions…"
