Casino Beats Licensing Ban

NEW ZEALAND – As reported by the Sunday Star Times: ``The country's newest casino will open at Sky City on Friday, despite the passage into law last month of the controversial Gambling Bill which prohibits any new casinos being licensed.

``Sky City Group managing director Evan Davies said planning for the $25 million, 15-table, 223-gaming machine casino at Federal St, Auckland, began some time ago. ```The new law also prohibits expansion of existing casino facilities,' he said. 'So this will also be the last new casino of any sort in New Zealand - at least while that law is in force.'

``The ban on further casino development is a two-edged sword for operator Sky City.

``While it does halt new casino developments, it also gives Sky City a cosy monopoly business in this country…"
