California casino expansion report released

28 November 2006

PALA INDIAN RESERVATION, California – As reported by the San Diego Union Tribune: One of the region's biggest casinos is about to get a lot bigger.

"A planned $100 million expansion of Pala's casino, hotel and health spa in North County will increase traffic on state Route 76 by more than 1,100 vehicles a day but otherwise poses no major off-reservation impacts, according to an environmental impact report being released today.

"The Draft Tribal Environmental Impact Report, prepared for the Pala Indian band by a San Diego consulting firm, analyzes the project's potential effects on traffic, water, public safety and eight other issues of concern, finding all can be mitigated satisfactorily.

"Pala plans to increase the size of its casino by more than a third, to 250,000 square feet from 182,000. It will add a 20-table poker room and 250 slot machines for a total of 2,524 – the most of any casino in the county – and will expand its dining, entertainment and retail venues.

"Pala's 507-room hotel will be remodeled, with many rooms being made larger or smaller with little or no change in the overall number.

"…Construction is to begin around June and take about a year to complete…"
