Atlantis Casino Considers Expansion

RENO, Nevada – As reported by the Reno Gazette-Journal: "With the expansion of the Peppermill Hotel-Casino and plans by Las Vegas-based Station Casinos to move into the Reno market, Atlantis Casino Resort officials are laying the groundwork for a possible expansion of their Virginia Street property.

"John and Ben Farahi, executives with the Atlantis' parent company, have asked Reno officials to rezone nearly 19 acres stretching north from the Atlantis to Moana Lane for a hotel-casino. The brothers own the land in a limited partnership, Biggest Little Investments.

"While no application has been filed to build, the zoning application states the Farahis intend to redevelop the Sierra Marketplace shopping center. Smith's Food & Drug had been the anchor tenant of that shopping center, but the store closed and several other storefronts are also vacant.

"…Mayor Bob Cashell said Tuesday he hadn't heard about the zoning change request or any immediate plans for an Atlantis expansion. But, he said, an expansion would fit city goals of increasing tourist development around the Reno-Sparks Convention Center…"
