Superbowl 2002

1 February 2002

The biggest sports betting day of the year will take place on February 3rd. Of course I'm referring to this year's Super Bowl. People that haven't made a bet since last year's game are gearing up for this year's action. Also, bettors that have battled the pointspread week in and week out since September are champing at the bit to get even or to press it up and get further ahead.

First of all the smart sports bettor understands that this game is more scrutinized than any other game all year. The number is very solid. Secondly in many cases if this game were to be played during the regular schedule you have to ask yourself, would I bet on it? In most cases the answer would be no!

But that doesn't get away from the fact that it's the most hyped and most watched and talked about game of the year. So a multitude of people will bet something on it. Myself included. I have bet on EVERY Super Bowl ever played, with varying results.

And this year will be no exception. As I write this column, it is the Friday before the last regular season weekend. The number out on the Super Bowl at this moment is NFC -6. The total is 48 1\2.

Here are the Super Bowl Pointspread Results from the past:
AFC : 15
NFC: 17
Tie 3
Totals results (kept since 1982):
13 overs
6 unders
1 tie

One bit of advice: In most cases the pointspread will go up on the favorite as it gets closer to kickoff. If you like the favorite bet early. If you like the underdog you might want to wait until it gets closer to kickoff. There are plenty of great parties all around Las Vegas to watch the Super Bowl. Lots of food and drink and giveaways. Call around the hotels in town and find the right party for you.

If you don't want to pay for the party, get to the sportsbook of your choice early and you'll have a great party for FREE. Also if you want to get invited to the private parties, ask the casino host while you are playing for the invited guests Super Bowl party. They are very lavish and the food is a step up or two from the other venues.

Whatever you decide to do, enjoy the game and I hope that you are on the winning side. My radio show begins it's annual hiatus on February 5. It's been another enjoyable six months on the Las Vegas airwaves. The show is on Sports Radio KENO 1460 Some of the special guests this past year have been: Lem Banker, Mort Olshan, Bob Mathias, Steven Crist, David Brenner, Tom McEvoy, and Pat Williams. I'll be returning for the 13th season on August 1.

As Always…Good Luck!
