This is my last column of this century. Considering the fact that I don't realistically
expect to have this opportunity at the end of the next century, I thought that
it would be appropriate to share with you some of the things that I know and feel.
Some pertain to gambling, some to life in general. The list will not be in any
order of importance.
1. Honesty should always be the first consideration whenever there is doubt
in your mind. Sometimes the truth hurts and it is easier to duck and hide behind
an elaborate smokescreen. But in the end, the truth in almost every circumstance
will be appreciated and respected.
2. There are good people and bad people. Fortunately there are many more good
people.
3. Money doesn't care who owns it.
4. Racial prejudice says more about the bigot than it does about the viewpoint.
5. Gambling doesn't build character, it reveals it.
6. If you don't know the rules, don't play the game.
7. No one that I respect uses the word lock or guarantee when they refer to
betting on sports.
8. Taking risks sometimes pays off, sometimes not. But if you never take any
risks you are limiting your potential.
9. You can never have enough friends. If you have three that you truly trust
you are indeed fortunate.
10. Charity is a way of thanking the fates.
11. Never double-up after a losing hand.
12. If you are born into a family that loves you, you have a great starting
hand in life.
13. Don't bet on the favorite in the Kentucky Derby.
14. The ten best bands I've ever seen are The Grateful Dead, The Who, Pink Floyd,
The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen &The E Street Band, Led
Zeppelin, The Pretenders, Bob Dylan with The Band, and Santana.
15. You must see the play "Death Of A Salesman".
16. It takes inner strength to be a person of principals and substance.
17. When in doubt, take the points.
18. Because you have two ears and only one mouth, you should listen twice as
much as you speak.
19. If you find yourself apologizing frequently, you should re-think what you
are doing in the first place.
20. If a deal sounds too good, and it feels like you are getting way the best
of it, in many cases you are about to get taken.
21. Don't embarrass your family or friends.
22. Never betray a trust.
23. Always keep your word.
24. Listen to an opera every once in a while.
25. Be open to possibilities.
26. Split aces and eights.
27. Don't bet the hard ways.
28. Toke the dealers when you win.
29. Know your neighbors.
30. Keep your lights on.
31. If a person burns you, write them off.
32. Look people in the eye.
33. Don't write something and send it that you will later regret.
34. Keep a good mechanic happy.
35. Let the people you love, know you love them.
36. Read "On The Road", "Piecework", and "Working".
37. Fair is fair, and just is just. It's hard to explain, but easy to recognize.
38. We owe our senior citizens and veterans a huge debt.
39. Help a visually or physically challenged person, if they need it.
40. See "The Godfather"1 & 2, a few times, skip 3.
41. Laugh out loud at least once a day.
42. Give a well thought out eulogy.
43. Try a micro-brew or two.
44. Hang out with someone smarter than yourself.
45. Read at least one newspaper a day.
46. Invest in your future.
47. Plant a tree.
48. Learn from people younger than yourself.
49. Learn from your mistakes.
50. Think good thoughts.
