Quick-takes: The month's trends in a glance – October 2007

2 November 2007
You can see the signs of gaming's growing acceptance everywhere in the United States. September provides an example of this growing attitude of acceptance. Governors of both Massachusetts and Maryland launched new initiatives to bring expanded gaming to their respective states. Both initiatives have generated a great deal of coverage – and most of it positive. ... (read more)

Bits & Pieces from Indian Country - October 2007

2 November 2007
Indian gaming is not escaping the competitive costs of gaming, nor can it hope to avoid the taxation levels gaming is experiencing. Tribes cannot be taxed by a state, just as the states are not taxed by the federal government. But to get expanded compacts and additional games, tribes are forced to make some kind of revenue sharing agreement with the host states. ... (read more)

New Jersey and Illinois have problems that are much alike – the budget process. The deadline to establish a budget for the state in each case is set by law. But when the deadline approaches, political differences raise their ugly heads, and they can and have delayed a final budget approval. Last year, ... (read more)

The last major tribe to get into gaming is slowly moving forward. The Navajo Nation has the largest enrollment of any tribe in the United States and the most territory (about the same size as the state of West Virginia), located in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. Nearly 20 years after the National Indian ... (read more)

Bits & Pieces from Indian Country - July 2007

15 September 2007
Indian gaming is becoming much more of a mainstream news story all of the time. In Florida, Connecticut and California, Indian gaming news is front-page material. The reason is simple: Indian gaming is big business. In Connecticut a report released recently calls Indian gaming "crucial" to the state's economy, accounting for 13 percent of job growth for the last 15 years. ... (read more)

Quicktakes: The month's trends in a glance - August 2007

15 September 2007
Some people never fail – never fail to do what we expect of them. Donald Trump is one of those people. That doesn't mean he succeeds in everything that he does; particularly in gaming, he is known more for his failures and bankruptcy than for his successes. More than his casinos, he is known for his flamboyant style, incredible ego and, of course, for his hair. ... (read more)

Bits & Pieces from Indian Country - August 2007

15 September 2007
Indian gaming sometimes produces the same blind prejudice that sports betting produces. A really prime example came from a federal judge in Wyoming. The case was not a gambling case or a casino case; it was a drug case. But the judge managed to find an opportunity to put casinos and the United States Cavalry in the same category. ... Quick-takes: The month's trends in a glance – July 2007

The raging battles make the news frequently. The stories usually come from Iraq, Afghanistan, Gaza or Lebanon and they are about the fierce fight for the hearts and minds of the citizens of the subject country. But those are not the only battles that make the evening news or affect the price of stock on Wall Street. ... (read more)

15 July 2007
We are months and months away from the presidential election, but presidential politics is everywhere – and into everything, including gaming. First Obama, while campaigning in New Jersey, took up the cause of the unions, characterizing dealers as criminally underpaid and put upon by management. McCain has ... (read more)

Bits & Pieces from Indian Country - June 2007

15 July 2007
A friend of mine uses the term "get it" for the ability to understand something that most people fail to understand – they don't get it. Indian gaming is sometimes in that category. Some people understand it – meaning Indian gaming's impact on rural tribes and their host communities – and some people don't get it. ... (read more)
