Ask the Slot Expert: Video poker with and without slot club rewards

15 January 2014
I play video poker at Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut. About a year ago they took many of their VP machines, about 15 to 20 percent at the bars and the casino floor, and stopped awarding points on them. However they increased the payback percentage on them. For example, Double/Double Bonus went from 8/5 to ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: A bizarre video poker experience

8 January 2014
I play at Ameristar Casino in St. Charles, MO. I like to play Double-Double video poker and have read many of your articles. They have helped a lot. I had what can only be described as a bizarre experience recently. The casino has several 9-5 games and only a few 9-6 games (and many more much worse!). ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Slot machine volatility

1 January 2014
Note: I'm having problems with my e-mail address, slotexpert@comcast.net. You'll get an error saying that the e-mail address is not available if you send a message to it. Comcast should have the problem fixed by Thursday, 01/02/14. If you got the error, please try sending your message again on Thursday. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Stopping the spin on a slot machine

25 December 2013
I love to read your columns online. Your experience and knowledge are often helpful in the casino. Last weekend I was in a casino playing a "Double-Triple Bonus" one-line slot game. The player next to me was playing very quickly and often stopping the reels while they were still rolling. After a while ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Slot machine hit frequency

18 December 2013
What penny slot machines have a high frequency of paying? Is that set by individual casinos or by the machine's manufacturer? I ask because you said that Cashman pays about 50 percent of the time. I would say that every penny slot machine that is a multi-line/multi-coin machine has a high hit frequency (more than 20 percent). ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Slot machines tease when you're almost out of credits

11 December 2013
My question is in regards to a phenomenon that I see a lot. Recently, I was in AC and played in four casinos where I noticed the following: While playing penny Cashman machines (various different types - Jail Bird, African Dusk, etc.), when I get near the end of whatever dollar amount I put in the machine ... Ask the Slot Expert: How much should I bet on a penny slot?

4 December 2013
John, I love, love, love your column! You are so smart. I have a question about the amount to play. I play penny slots mostly and have heard different things. Some say you should play the lowest or a lot of people say you should play the max to really hit! I am so confused about this, I thought I ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Slot player's rituals

27 November 2013
I thought I would let you know Harrah's Chester (Philadelphia, Penn.) policy (as of a few months ago) regarding shutting down a slot machine. They will allow it for Platinum, Diamond and Seven Stars members only and then grant a maximum time for the machine to be down according to player status. I believe Platinum is one hour, Diamond is two and Seven Stars is three hours. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Slot machine hit frequency, payback and volatility

20 November 2013
Recent articles remind me of getting an answer from Casino Player magazine about whether to stay or stray from the machine. The answer was because of volatility I should stay. That's what I think is "wrong" with slots. High volatility and LOW hit frequency. Both make the player's bankroll very volatile. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: A video poker triple play

13 November 2013
I’ve noticed at my regular casino that there’s a $100 video poker machine that almost never gets played. I’m wondering if the machine pays back a percentage of what it takes in, does this mean that it won’t pay out until it builds up and takes in some cash over time? Or — assuming the paytable is the same ... (read more)
