A few weeks ago I reported that the IRS is considering lowering the W-2G threshold on slot winnings from $1,200 to $600. I understand that some slots work as if they are lottery scratch-off tickets. Does that mean a limited number of winning tickets?
It seems to me you can play for a top prize that has been awarded and never know it had already been claimed. I think this is unfair to the player, who is thinking that a max bet will achieve a jackpot but that jackpot has already been paid. ... (read more)

reporting gambling wins and losses that no one has yet mentioned.
Wins
are reported as income. Losses are reported as deductions. With this
method, the wins count toward gross income, which determines how much
retirees pay per month for Medicare, as well as limiting deductions such as

Anyone (mostly seniors) that CAN'T itemize is penalized more because they cannot declare the amount lost against wins!!
Yes, it was this way before, but now it will hurt us more on lower wins.

Follow-up to IRS proposal to lower W-2G threshold to $600: In a surprise move, the IRS has decided not to lower the W-2G threshold to $600, but it will instead eliminate the requirement the W-2G altogether, bringing the reporting requirements for slot players in line with those for table games players.
