John Robison Gaming Guru - Page 23Ask the Slot Expert: Casino Gift Promotions: A different coax for different folks27 July 2022
Okay, I know that a few weeks ago I wrote that I was no longer being a schnorrer and picking up every free gift a casino offers me --
How many T-shirts do you need? At least they wear out after a while. I look to my left and there's a heavyweight hoodie that is still in a plastic bag. I have to find ... (read more)
Ask the Slot Expert: Too much consolidation in Las Vegas casinos?20 July 2022
Many years ago I tried to put together some ideas for a novel about Las Vegas in the future. Starting with Las Vegas around 2000, I tried to imagine what a perfect city might be like. My future Las Vegas was going to have a world class public transportation system. A light rail system runs from the airport to all along the strip, either above ground or below. ... (read more)
Ask the Slot Expert: Another good casino change due to Covid13 July 2022
Last week I wrote that I could think of only one good thing in casinos that resulted from the pandemic. I thought of another one.
This change doesn’t affect other people, only me. It’s a change in my attitude.
I've stopped picking up almost every gift a casino offers. I really don’t need another logo T-shirt or messenger bag. ... (read more)
Ask the Slot Expert: Cashless gaming - the Good, the Bad and the Ugly6 July 2022
Not much good came from the Las Vegas locals casinos' response to the coronavirus pandemic. Some discontinued long-running promotions. Some doubled the action required to earn a point on video poker. Some eliminated daily 3x points. Some cut back on the number of point multiplier days. Some cut back on gifts. ... (read more)

I've spent the past few weeks playing multi-hand video poker exclusively (well, there's been some Invaders Attack from the Planet Moolah too, but I've pretty much come up MT from the ETs). I've been hitting the multi-hand machines lately for two reasons.
First, I've become a bit bored with playing single-hand machines. ... (read more)
Ask the Slot Expert: Mad dash to requalify for slot club elite15 June 2022
I let time slip away from me and now I'm in a mad dash to requalify for the elite level in a slot club. I'm not keen on spending the hours it will take to requalify playing single-hand video poker -- and, to be honest, I'm getting a bit bored with it -- so I'm playing more multi-hand.
The problem with ... (read more)
Ask the Slot Expert: I don't win on the slots anymore8 June 2022
Question: My wife and I have been playing slots since about 1996.
Overall, we have done reasonably well. We usually play mainly the same types of machines. We quite often win sufficient to continue to keep going back to the casinos to play.
I used to track our play simply as dollars spent and dollars won. ... (read more)
Ask the Slot Expert: Cascading reels slot math1 June 2022
Question: I was doing research on par sheet related to cascading reels slots. I wonder how the cascading math is designed? Could you give me some idea?
Answer: I haven't been able to get my hands on a PAR sheet for a cascading reels slot machine, but this is my understanding of how they did the math. ... (read more)
Ask the Slot Expert: Son of Monty Hall plays Survivor25 May 2022
Question: I just read your "survivor" article of today.
The odds don't work that way.
The odds ARE 50/50 once one of the losers is revealed. The odds change, just like in Blackjack once cards are revealed. Otherwise, counting cards would be meaningless, and we know that's not the case.
I ... (read more)
