A reader asks: Why aren't there multiple strategies for playing video poker, like a short-term strategy that gives you the greatest chance of winning money in a session and a long-term strategy that gives you the greatest chance of winning money in the long run?

Video poker book authors publish only one strategy for each paytable because it's the best strategy for all players to follow. You'll win less money in the long run by following a strategy other than the mathematically correct strategy.

The long run is nothing but the sum of a series short runs. Even though the mathematically correct strategy may sometimes cause you to win less money in a session than you would have won by following a different strategy, when you add up all of your sessions, only by always following the mathematically correct strategy can you win the greatest amount of money possible.
