The Slot Expert's Guide to Winning at Slots and Video Poker

2 October 2000

You can hear me give my slot and video poker tips live on The Good Times Show, hosted by Rudi Schiffer with Frank Scoblete, which is broadcast live from Memphis on WHBQ over the air on 560AM and over the Internet on Yahoo! Broadcast on Saturday morning from 8-10 CT.

It seems like my luck when playing the slots or video poker is always inversely proportional to the luck of the players near me. Whenever I'm playing a machine that has gone into Hoover-mode, vacuuming the money out of my wallet, the people near me are having the sessions of their lives.

I remember playing a Wild Red, White, and Blue machine that was sucking bills out of my wallet at the Atlantic City Hilton. I was researching the slot clubs in Atlantic City, so I had to play a specific amount of action through the machine. I could have switched machines, but I had other casinos to visit that day and I wanted to finish as quickly as possible. Besides, I kept hoping the machine would reward my persistence with a big jackpot.

Of course, as this machine was draining me dry, the lady playing the machine next to me was hitting something every other spin. She cashed out whenever she hit something and her coin tray was almost overflowing. When she saw me feed my machine again, she said, "That machine owes you."

My luck didn't change, and neither did hers. I kept losing and she kept winning. It was very frustrating. I kept my cool, but others aren't as even-tempered. I know someone who got so upset when someone near him won a jackpot and he got a near miss that he broke the glass on a slot machine.

The results of the players near you have no effect on your results. Don't let their good fortune get you down or encourage you to play more than you otherwise would have.

This week's tip: Don't let the good luck of the other players near you affect you.
