The Slot Expert's Guide to Winning at Slots and Video Poker

2 July 2001

I spent a long weekend in Tunica a few weeks ago and I noticed that the casinos had installed a number of multi-denomination machines. This week's tip deals with multi-denomination machines.

A multi-denomination machine is the ultimate Game Maker. Not only do you get to play a number of different games at one machine, you can also play a number of different denominations. You choose nickels when you play an Aussie-style, multi-coin/multi-line game, move up to quarters for a traditional 3-reel game, and maybe switch to half dollars to play video poker. You can play all of those games and denominations and never have to switch machines once.

One thing to be aware of when you play video poker on a multi-denomination machine is that different denominations may have different paytables. For example, a machine might have 9/6 Jacks when you have each credit worth $1, but only 8/5 Jacks when each credit is worth less.

Here are two tips for multi-denomination machines:

1. If you want to play video poker, make sure that you know which denomination was chosen before you check the paytables. Otherwise, you may sit down to play a machine that pays its dollar players well, only to discover that quarter players--you--are not paid as well.

2. Also make sure you know what denomination is active before you hit the bet 1 or bet max buttons. You don't want to put $10 in a machine thinking that you'll get a lot of nickel video poker play out of it, only to discover that half your session stake was eaten by one hand because the machine was set for dollar play.

Multi-denomination machines give the slot player a lot of flexibility in one machine. But with that flexibility comes the potential for making a mistake.

This week's tip: Be careful when playing multi-denomination machines.
