Soliciting a tip from a slot player in New York26 July 2010
Dear Attendant, I like riddles. Too bad you already gave the answer: One is allowed, the other isn't. The only difference I can see is that the tip jar is a passive solicitation for a tip (providing the cashier doesn't make a comment about how empty the jar is) and telling the patron that an attendant can accept a tip is an active solicitation. I suggest you ask your supervisor or your local state representative for the legal justification for the restriction. It's possible that the slot-enabling legislation prohibits actively soliciting a tip, but allows -- or doesn't address -- a passive solicitation. John Send your slot and video poker questions to John Robison, Slot Expert, at slotexpert@comcast.net. Because of the volume of mail I receive, I regret that I can't reply to every question.
