Should casinos be responsible for tracking lost tickets?

20 April 2011

Should it be the casino’s responsibility to track where a lost ticket went, with surveillance’s help, of course? Or should the customer be told his property is his responsibility, not ours?

Thanks,
Vivian

Dear Vivian,

My answer is both.

Tickets are like cash and should be treated as such. Players should take as much care with a $100 ticket as they do with a $100 bill.

On the other hand, tickets are not like cash in that they can be tracked and controlled by the casino's Ticket-In-Ticket-Out system. A ticket can be invalidated and made worthless in the system.

I think the casino should invalidate a lost ticket if it has not been redeemed. If it has been redeemed, the casino should do what it can to help the player recover the money, like it would for other lost property.

Best of luck in and out of the casinos,
John
