Can horoscopes help me win at the slots?14 June 2008
Dear Sail, Horoscopes are just as effective at helping you win at the slots as putting pictures of your children on the machine, alternating randomly between pressing the button and pulling the handle, waving your hand across the reels before each spin, and wearing your lucky underwear. I was going to say that you have nothing to lose by following your horoscope because it doesn't decrease your odds, even though it doesn't increase them either. But then I thought of this possible horoscope: "The struggle may be long, but luck will come your way eventually. Don't give up too soon." Someone whose horoscope says they're due for good luck may lose more than they can really afford to lose because they think that good fortune will come with the next $100 buy-in. And when good fortune doesn't come, they think it will come with the next buy-in. So they keep feeding machines because they think they're due to hit, just like one can think a machine is due to hit. Put the horoscopes where they belong — in the bottom of the bird cage. Best of luck in and out of the casinos, Send your slot and video poker questions to John Robison, Slot Expert, at slotexpert@comcast.net. Because of the volume of mail I receive, I regret that I can't reply to every question. This article is provided by the Frank Scoblete Network. Melissa A. Kaplan is the network's managing editor.
